A Cruise Stop Worth Climbing: Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Karis & Josh visiting the Christ the Redeemer statue on Mount Isabel de Torres in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic during a Virgin Voyages cruise stop

Ever stepped off a cruise ship and found yourself standing at the top of a mountain overlooking an entire Caribbean coastline? That’s exactly what happened when I visited the Christ the Redeemer statue in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. One moment I was stepping off my Virgin Voyages cruise ship, and the next I was riding up a lush tropical mountain toward one of the most peaceful viewpoints on the island.

If you’re planning a cruise stop or vacation in Puerto Plata, this landmark should absolutely be on your list.

A hidden gem above Puerto Plata

The Christ the Redeemer statue, known locally as Cristo Redentor, sits high above the city on Mount Isabel de Torres. Standing about 38 meters tall, the statue was inaugurated in 1975 and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Puerto Plata.

Many travelers are surprised to learn that the Dominican Republic has its own Christ the Redeemer statue similar to the famous one in Rio de Janeiro. While the Brazilian statue gets most of the global attention, the Puerto Plata version offers something just as special: incredible views, tropical gardens, and a peaceful atmosphere high above the city.

From the top of the mountain, you can see Puerto Plata, the surrounding coastline, and the bright blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean stretching far into the distance.

How to visit the Christ the Redeemer statue

One of the most exciting parts of visiting this landmark is how you get there.

To reach the statue, visitors take the Puerto Plata cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres. The cable car ride itself is an experience and one of the most unique attractions in the Dominican Republic.

The ride takes about 10 minutes as the gondola slowly climbs through the tropical mountain landscape. As you go higher, the views open up and you can see the entire Puerto Plata area below.

When I visited, I had just arrived in port on a Virgin Voyages cruise, making this an easy and memorable excursion during a cruise stop in Puerto Plata. It’s one of those experiences that feels adventurous but is still very easy to access.

Once you reach the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, you’ll find much more than just the statue.

What you’ll see at the top

At the top of the mountain, the Christ the Redeemer statue stands with its arms open, overlooking the city and ocean below. It’s a peaceful spot and one of the best photo locations in Puerto Plata.

Around the statue you’ll also find beautiful botanical gardens filled with tropical plants, walking paths, and shaded areas to relax while taking in the scenery.

Many visitors spend time exploring the gardens, walking around the viewpoint areas, and capturing photos of the incredible views.

On a clear day, you can see miles of coastline along the Dominican Republic’s northern shore.

Why this is one of the best things to do in Puerto Plata

Visiting Mount Isabel de Torres is more than just seeing a statue. It’s the combination of the cable car ride, the mountain views, and the relaxing gardens that make this experience so memorable.

For cruise travelers arriving in Puerto Plata, it’s also one of the easiest excursions to plan because it’s close to the cruise port and offers a completely different perspective of the island.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Plata, this is also a great half-day adventure away from the beach.

Travel tips for visiting Mount Isabel de Torres

If you plan to visit the Christ the Redeemer statue in Puerto Plata, here are a few helpful tips.

Try to visit earlier in the day. The mountain can sometimes get covered in clouds later in the afternoon, which can block the views.

Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the botanical gardens and walking paths.

Bring your camera or phone fully charged because the views from the top are some of the best photo opportunities in Puerto Plata.

And most importantly, take your time. The peaceful atmosphere at the top of Mount Isabel de Torres makes it a place you’ll want to slow down and enjoy.
